Best decision ever!!
I signed my twin seven year old boys up for their first karate class in late September. Almost immediately, both their teachers and I noticed dramatic improvements in their behavior. Prior to karate, they couldn't focus on tasks and often got in trouble for impulsively acting out. There was a dramatic improvement right away, and I still continue to see improvements with focus, week after week (now just over 4 months in). The focus and respect that they have learned has really allowed our family to spend more time enjoying each other and less time focusing on behavior correction. I can't thank the Brian Mayes team enough!!

For the last month, I've been taking the adult kickboxing class here. It's really fun, motivating, and I can already see a change in how my clothes fit me. I leave each class feeling (sweaty and) great. I was hesitant about signing up for a 3x/week class, but I find myself wanting to go each time. I can't say I feel the same way about my home gym equipment. These instructors keep me moving and keep me wanting more. I love it.

The kickboxing classes are always fun and energetic; great for ALL skill levels!
Whether you haven't been to the gym in years or you have a bunch of Spartan races under your belt, you will leave feeling 100 times better than before you came in.
Instructors are amazing and motivational. When you walk through the doors, you're already a part of the family.

I started BMK kickboxing almost a year ago and a daily workout here has become integral to starting my busy days off right!

I have absolutely loved the kickboxing classes! I am totally new to kickboxing and have found the workouts to be engaging, challenging, and fun! The instructors are friendly and love helping you understand technique. A huge bonus is that just after 12 weeks I've noticed lots of improvement in my fitness level, as well as more muscle tone and a trimmer waistline. Hello abs, here we come :) Thanks Kerri, Edith, Megan and Melanie for the awesome workouts!

Understanding Behavior Modification

Understanding Behavior Modification

Reinforcement Vs. Punishment

All parents want their children to exhibit positive behaviors that will help them transition smoothly through the different stages of their development. And while parents have the best intentions, we often don’t use the most effective discipline strategies to achieve that goal. And granted, as parents, we do our best to implement the knowledge and experiences that we have in our parenting. However, becoming more familiar with operant conditioning concerning behavior modification strategies such as positive reinforcement can take parenting to a new level.

Operant conditioning was founded by B.F. Skinner, who believed that the most effective method for understanding behavior, looked at the causes of an action and its outcomes. His findings spawned from Edward Thorndike’s work on the “Law of Effect.” Through this “method of learning,” relationships are made between behaviors and consequences, which can be positive or negative. As Skinner performed his studies, he found that reinforced or rewarded actions are more likely to be repeated.

In operant conditioning, there are key terms used to describe the types of responses, which are often confused. Positive means adding something, negative means taking something away, reinforcement means increasing a behavior, and punishment means decreasing a behavior.

  1. Positive Reinforcement: A behavior is strengthened by the addition of a desirable stimulus. Ex. A parent gives a child more time to play video games if he cleans his room.
  2. Negative Reinforcement: A behavior is strengthened by the removal of an undesirable stimulus. Ex. A parent makes a child pay $5 every time her room is not clean.
  3. Positive Punishment: A behavior is weakened by the addition of an undesirable stimulus. Ex. A parent scolds a child when they misbehave.
  4. Negative Punishment: A behavior is weakened by removing a desirable stimulus. Ex. A parent takes away a child’s favorite toy when they misbehave.

Many parents fall into the discipline strategies involving punishment. And while it can be useful at the moment, more long-term effects such as fear and aggression can be instilled. Through his studies, Skinner found that positive reinforcement was the most effective method of reinforcing desirable behaviors.

When it comes to behavior modification, Brian Mayes Karate Academy utilizes positive reinforcement as the go-to approach. Our “Certified Pediatric Ninja Specialists” are trained in science and psychology to impact children’s lives positively. In the classroom, students earn stripes for their belts when they work hard to achieve a new skill. When they receive eight stripes, they can earn a higher-level belt. Also, the class structure allows time for a “game” at the end of class as a reward for hard work. These positive reinforcement strategies are also shared with parents in ways that can be implemented at home.

Using positive reinforcement strategies can aid parents in fostering more positive behaviors in their children. Although this takes a little more time and effort to implement, the benefits are long-lasting. Additionally, children will feel more confident and happy, and the parent-child bond will improve.
