Best decision ever!!
I signed my twin seven year old boys up for their first karate class in late September. Almost immediately, both their teachers and I noticed dramatic improvements in their behavior. Prior to karate, they couldn't focus on tasks and often got in trouble for impulsively acting out. There was a dramatic improvement right away, and I still continue to see improvements with focus, week after week (now just over 4 months in). The focus and respect that they have learned has really allowed our family to spend more time enjoying each other and less time focusing on behavior correction. I can't thank the Brian Mayes team enough!!

For the last month, I've been taking the adult kickboxing class here. It's really fun, motivating, and I can already see a change in how my clothes fit me. I leave each class feeling (sweaty and) great. I was hesitant about signing up for a 3x/week class, but I find myself wanting to go each time. I can't say I feel the same way about my home gym equipment. These instructors keep me moving and keep me wanting more. I love it.

The kickboxing classes are always fun and energetic; great for ALL skill levels!
Whether you haven't been to the gym in years or you have a bunch of Spartan races under your belt, you will leave feeling 100 times better than before you came in.
Instructors are amazing and motivational. When you walk through the doors, you're already a part of the family.

I started BMK kickboxing almost a year ago and a daily workout here has become integral to starting my busy days off right!

I have absolutely loved the kickboxing classes! I am totally new to kickboxing and have found the workouts to be engaging, challenging, and fun! The instructors are friendly and love helping you understand technique. A huge bonus is that just after 12 weeks I've noticed lots of improvement in my fitness level, as well as more muscle tone and a trimmer waistline. Hello abs, here we come :) Thanks Kerri, Edith, Megan and Melanie for the awesome workouts!

Helping Children Feel Secure in an Uncertain World

The news can be full of scary stories and information, especially for children. Our current situation has brought about even more concern for everyone in the world. If adults are feeling panicked, imagine how children must be feeling. And no matter the age, children can be emotionally affected by the news and begin feeling anxious about what they are hearing. For this reason, it’s important for parents to spend time connecting with their children and implementing ways that help them feel secure.

And, of course, during this worldwide turmoil, parents may also feel unsure and struggle with what to say to their children. But this is the time as parents we should take the opportunity to help members in the family reconnect with each other, which will help everyone feel more secure. Having honest discussions about what everyone is feeling is vital to processing the information in a healthier way. It’s important that parents have these conversations to help ease fear about our “new normal” and implement strategies that will leave children feeling more assured.

This is the perfect opportunity to implement strategies developed with you, the parent, in mind. Since the Brian Mayes Karate (BMK) Parent Skillz program was created based on research in the areas of child development and psychology, the methods can be applied to any situation. The BMK Parent Skillz program incorporates ways to strengthen the parent-child bond which is crucial within the status of our world today. In addition to this, the D.O.S.E. method is easily implemented within the BMK Parent Skillz and uses strategies that help counteract the rush of cortisol that everyone is feeling.

In the BMK Parent Skillz system, there are 8 skills that were developed. While all of them are equally important, attunement, connection, patience and nurturing are a good place to start in regard to what we are facing, as a nation, today. It’s important for parents to be attuned to their child’s feelings regarding the overflow of information and being separated from their friends. Being patient with them with questions they may have or frustrations they may feel are important. Spending time connecting with them is essential to them feeling more secure and nurturing them through these tough times will help them feel more at ease.

In helping children feel more comfort in these times, implementing strategies that will boost positive brain chemicals and neutralize cortisol, which is released when we are stressed or fearful, is helpful. Using this strategy along with the Parent Skillz is invaluable. Parents can increase dopamine by setting up time for families to do fun activities together. Giving hugs and spending time connecting with each other increases oxytocin which fosters trust and stability.

By setting a positive mood, parents can increase serotonin which will make everyone more at ease. And boosting endorphins by going for a walk as a family or doing an online workout together will put everyone in a better mood.

In uncertain times, families can ease the anxiety by connecting with each other and making the best of the situation. By implementing Parent Skillz and finding ways to boost the positive chemicals in the brain, parents can create an environment that fosters security for their family. In doing this, a stronger family bond will be created and getting through the tough times, together, will be easier.
